Longoria nabs return trip to THSPA state meet

THSWPA REGION 5 POWERLIFTING

Pearsall will send a lifter and one alternate to state competition in Abilene on March 23 following regional action at Bishop last week.

Joey Longoria will return to the state meet after finishing seventh a year ago. He was the regional champion in the 114-lb. weight class this year with a total lift of 885 lbs., a 45-lb. improvement from a year ago. Longoria's lifts included 325 lbs. in the squat, 200 lbs. on the bench press and 360 lbs. in the deadlift.

Eden Fuentes narrowly missed out on an outright state berth as he hit a total lift of 1,195 lb., five pounds shy of the qualifying weight. Coach Michael Bonugli will take Fuentes to state as an alternate. Fuentes posted lifts of 470 lbs. in the squat, 250 lbs. in the bench press and 475 lbs. in the deadlift.

RACKING UP TITLES

Top Left) The Dilley High School freshmen Wolves basketball team completed yet another district championship season this year. The team was coaches by Doug Burford this year. The team has now clinched league titles as seventh graders, eighth graders and ninth graders. (Top Right) The Mary Harper Middle School seventh grade Pups capped a perfect 10-0 season in hoops play this year, earning a district championship in the process. The team is coached by Eloy Zertuche and Coach Quinters

Pearsall's girls tallied 189 points to finish just behind first place Carrizo Springs in action at the Wildcat Relays on Saturday, March 2. The Mavs finished with 116 points as they came in third at the event behind Carrizo Springs and Eagle Pass CC Winn. The Pearsall girls collected six gold medals as a number of athletes won various different events at the meet. Kiana Kebbi walked away with gold in the 200m dash and long jump while Lauren Shafer won the 400m dash, Natalie Vega was tops in the two-mile run, the 400m relay team ran away with that race. Brianna Moreno was also first in the high jump.

Pearsall opens track season with 2-3 finish at Maverick Relays

2019 MAVERICK RELAYS

Pearsall's Lady Mavs were third and the Mavs fifth overall in track and field action at the Lobo Relays in Uvalde on Saturday, February 23.

Competing against Class 5A and higher schools, Pearsall held its own on the girls' side.

The host Lady Lobos won the event with 169 points while Eagle Pass was second with 158 points. Pearsall tallied 87 points in third.

Dilley hosts annual softball tourney

SOFTBALL

Dilley will play host to the annual Lady Wolves Softball Tournament this weekend as 12 schools compete in a Round Robin and bracket play event beginning on Thursday, February 28.

Teams in contention at the event include Dilley, San Antonio Jefferson, Sabinal in Pool 1, Poth, Bandera, Lytle in Pool 2, D'Hanis, SA Burbank, Carrizo Springs in Pool 3 and Laredo Nixon, Crystal City and Cotulla in Pool 4.

Cowboys, Wolves fall at bi-district

BI-DISTRICT PLAYOFFS

Dilley and Cotulla's hoops seasons came to an end with bi-district losses to Odem and Goliad last Tuesday evening, February 19.

Dilley fell 75-45 to a stout Odem Owls' squad in their bi-district outing last week in Three Rivers while the Cowboys dropped an 80-58 decision to the Goliad Tigers in Poteet.

Both teams are still currently in playoff contention as Odem took on Bishop Tuesday night in one regional quarterfinal while Goliad was facing Santa Rosa in another regional quarterfinal matchup.

Cowgirls are fourth at Mav Relays

2019 TRACK & FIELD

Cotulla opened up its 2019 track and field season at the Maverick Relays on Thursday, February 14, finishing fourth overall at the event.

“This early meet was an impressive one for our Cowgirls,” CHS Head Coach Susan Garcia said. “Aaliyah Charo is starting where she left off last year as she won the 3,200m and 1,600m runs.”

Gabby Perkins was fifth in the 100m dash and also placed fourth in the 200m dash. Kelsy Garcia also competed in the 100m and 200m events.

Lady Mavs race to 5-1-2 softball mark Pearsall third at Somerset, rallies for wins over Laredo, Fredericksburg.

SOFTBALL

Pearsall rallied late for wins over Laredo Alexander and Fredericksburg and took third at the Somerset Softball Tournament February 14-16 as the team opened the 2019 season with a 5-1-2 mark.

The Lady Mavs blasted seven hits and scored in their final at-bat to edge Alexander in their softball opener on Tuesday, February 12. Senior Aracely Ortiz had the walk-off, game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the seventh.

“We had our season opener against Laredo Alexander and pulled off some late game heroics,” PHS Head Coach Reynaldo Ramirez said. “We played very well for being young and battled a very good Laredo team for seven complete innings and came out on top 3-2.”

Pearsall then took part in the Bulldog Tournament in Somerset and went 3-1-2 at the event, finishing in a tie for third overall.

Dilley powerlifting is sixth at Crystal City

Dilley's powerlifting teams both finished sixth overall in action at Crystal City's 2019 Powerlifting Championships on Saturday, February 16.

Kristal Rodriguez and Dustin Dominguez both took the top spots in their respective weight classes ten athletes medaled at the event.

Rodriguez tallied a total weight of 645 lbs. in the 114-lb. weight class while Dominguez recorded a total weight of 1,310 lbs. at 275 lbs.

Lexi Ramirez was third for the Lady Wolves at 165 lbs. with a total lift of 735 lbs. and Natalie Garza was fourth at 97 lbs. with a total lift of

455.

Jaslyn Ochoa, Anamarie Rodriguez, Zenestina Perez and Saylene Torres were all fifth in their divisions.

Pearsall opens track season with 2-3 finish at Maverick Relays

2019 MAVERICK RELAYS

Pearsall took the second and third place spots at the annual Maverick Relays on Thursday, February 14, marking the start of the 2019 track and field season.

Carrizo Springs took the girls' title with 220 points. The Lady Mavs were on their heels for much of the night and took the runner-up spot with 207 points. The Cotulla Cowgirls were fourth and Dilley came in sixth.

Natalia won the boys' division with 146 points while the Mavs were third with 118 points. Cotulla's boys were sixth with 26 points while the Dilley Wolves were seventh.

Kiana Kebbi and Briana Moreno paced Pearsall as the two racked up numerous gold medals for the team. Kebbi took first in the 200m dash, 400m relay and long jump while Moreno was tops in the 400m dash, 800m run, mile relay and high jump. Pearsall swept two of the three relays and were second in the 800m relay.
