Pearsall powerlifting teams are second at Cotulla Invitational

2019 HIGH SCHOOL POWERLIFTING

Pearsall's powerlifting teams finished second overall in action at the Cotulla meet on Thursday, January 31. The Mavericks were runners-up to the host Cowboys team, tallying 44 points to the Cowboys' 67 points. Pearsall's Lady Mavs were also second to the Cowgirls with 47 points while Cotulla had 61 points. Teams in attendance included Cotulla, Carrizo Springs, Charlotte and Hondo. The Mavericks had three division champions at the event as Joey Longoria won the 114-lb. division, Eden Fuentes won the 165-lb. weight class and Josiah Marquez was tops in the 198-lb. division.

Martinez era ends at DISD, search for new AD begins Garza named Interim Athletic Director.

Dilley ISD officials have made a change in leadership, opening up the athletic director position, ending the five-year run of former AD Manny Martinez with the program.

The change was made during a board meeting last month and Cassandra Garza has been named the Interim Athletic Director.

Cowboys top Wolves, Indians, force second place tie

2019 BOYS BASKETBALL

Cotulla edged their IH-35 rival Wolves 75-70 in district play and then knocked off Jourdanton to force a three-way tie for second place in the league standings last week.

Cotulla, Dilley and Jourdanton all sport 4-3 records and sit tied for second in the standings. Lytle is atop the field at 7-0 in league play.

Cotulla's only league losses are to Lytle twice and once to Jourdanton. Dilley was on track in second place before falling to the Cowboys and then suffered a huge setback with a four-point loss to Natalia last week.

Cotulla lifters nab team titles at Laredo meet

2019 HIGH SCHOOL POWERLIFTING

Cotulla's powerlifting teams swept the field as both won team titles at the Laredo United South Invitational on Saturday, January 26.

The Cowboys had 11 lifters place in their respective divisions at the event while the Cowgirls saw nine athletes earn medals.

Stephanie Benavidez and Joseph Martinez both earned Outstanding Lifter accolades at the meet as Benavidez was named the Outstanding Lightweight Lifter while Martinez was tabbed the Outstanding Heavyweight Lifter.

Benavidez competed in the 132-lb. weight class and posted a total weight of 805 lbs. She recorded lifts of 340 lbs. in the squat, 155 lbs. in the bench press and 310 lbs. in the deadlift.

Lady Mavs split league outings, eye third straight playoff berth

2019 GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Despite spliting contests in league play last week, Pearsall closed in on its third straight playoff berth with a 46-20 decision over Carrizo Springs.

Having started the second round of league play, Pearsall sits fourth in the standings at 1-5. The team is 21-12 overall.

After a strong pre-district schedule, Pearsall dropped its first four league outings, including a surprising 37-21 loss to the Lady Wildcats in their opener.

Pearsall returned the favor last Tuesday, winning a 46-29 decision to notch their first league win.

Emy Carrillo and Aracely Ortiz both finished with 14 points apiece in the win.

Lady Mavs tumble, drop third straight in district

Pearsall’s bid for a third straight playoff berth took a hit last week as the Lady Mavs dropped their third straight league contest, falling 62-27 to Devine and 40-27 to Hondo.

Scoring leaders Aracely Ortiz and Emy Carrillo were limited to six points in the loss to Hondo Friday night as the team fell to 1-3 in the league standings.

Mavs third Lady Mavs fourth at Uvalde

2019 HIGH SCHOOL POWERLIFTING

Pearsall's Maverick powerlifting team finished third overall while the Lady Mavs were fourth at the Uvalde meet on Saturday, January 19.

Both competed in fields of eight teams in their respective divisions.

Joey Longoria and Josiah Marquez both took first place in their weight classes while Alyssa Alva and Alamar Garcia were champions in their divisions on the girls' side.

Dilley girls earn team title at Cigarroa meet

Dilley's Lady Wolves captured the team title while the Wolves were third overall at the 2019 Toro Powerlifting Championship at Cigarroa High School in Laredo on Saturday, January 19.

Jaslyn Ochoa, Kristal Rodriguez and Saylene Torres all took first in their respective weight classes.

Lady Wolves place third at Laredo Martin meet

2019 HIGH SCHOOL POWERLIFTING

Kristal Rodriguez won her weight class while the Lady Wolves finished third overall at the Laredo Martin Powerlifting Invitational on Saturday, January 12.

Dilley finished four points shy of second place Laredo Cigarroa and 16 points behind team champion Hebbronville in their first meet of the season.

The Lady Wolves placed higher than six other Laredo schools at the event.

Rodriguez, a state qualifier a year ago, paced her team as she finished first in the 123-lb. weight class with a total weight of 625 lbs.

Natalie Garza, Jaslyn Ochoa and Elyssa Aguilar all finished second in their respective divisions.
