Mavs fall to Panthers in final outing before holiday break

In the final action prior to the Christmas holiday break, Pearsall took on Medina Valley last week in a rematch of a contest played at the Maverick Classic tournament. The Mavs dropped a narrow decision to the Panthers in the previous outing but were handed a 51-19 decision on December 15.

COWGIRLS TOPS IN TILDEN

Cotulla continued its hot streak, winning three more games in a row to capture the title at the McMullen County basketball tournament in Tilden last weekend. The Cowgirls, winners of 12 of their last 15 games, avenged their 2014 playoff loss to George West at the event, taking a narrow 39-35 decision over the Lady Longhorns. George West topped Cotulla 64-61 in overtime in the bi-district playoffs.

Mavericks drop four of five at Poteet Tournament, top rival Wolves in non-district.

Pearsall opened its week with a lopsided win over Dilley, lost four straight in action at the Poteet basketball tournament but ended the event with a win over Lytle. Facing stiff opposition at the event, two of Pearsall's losses were to Class 5A Uvalde and #6 state ranked Nixon-Smiley.

Wolves collect second straight pee wee title

Junior division Wolves top Pearsall 44-14 to claim back-to-back championships.

Dilley wrapped up a dominant 2015 pee wee football season with a 44-14 rout of the Pearsall junior division Mavericks on Saturday at Gosch Field. The win capped an undefeated season for the junior Wolves, who were unscored on until Pearsall put up 14 points in the title game.

Cowgirls finish third during busy tournament weekend in Pearsall.

Cotulla went 2-1 in pool play and 4-2 overall in tournament action at the Maverick Classic in Pearsall to take third in the event over the weekend. Cotulla's two losses also came from the same team as Holy Cross topped the Cowgirls in pool play 38-22 and during bracket play 34-26.

Mavs place 24 on all-district football team

Leal named offensive MVP, Neal earns Newcomer of the Year title.

Pearsall had 24 members of its bi-district finalist football team named to the all-district team, which was recently announced. Members of the 14-4A, Division II squad are annually announced following the playoff exit of each district representative. The Mavericks had 14 members of the named to the all-district first and second teams while ten were also given honorable mention.

Pearsall holds off Cowboys to win non-district affair 38-30.

Pearsall notched its first win of the season last week with a 38-30 decision over rival Cotulla on Monday, November 24. Previously, the Mavericks had dropped decisions to Holy Cross, 65-47, and to Somerset, 78-41. Pearsall held a narrow 6-5 lead after the first and increased it to 11-8 at halftime.

Maverick Classic opens Thursday, December 3

Pearsall will play host to the annual Maverick Classic basketball tournament Thursday, December 3 to Saturday, December 5. A total of 12 teams will be in contention for the boys’ title while eight are slated to compete for the championship in the girls’ division.

UIL releases 2016-18 conference cutoff numbers

Pearsall, Dilley unchanged, Cotulla moving up to 3A, Division I.

The University Interscholastic League released the conference cutoff numbers for the 2016-2018 reclassification and realignment Friday morning, November 20, according to a UIL press release. The numbers provide the range of enrollment for each of the six conferences (1A-6A), including the divisional cutoffs for football.

Wolves’ rally falls short, Lions claim 24-21 win

In a season filled with streaky play, Dilley fell behind early but rallied late in ultimately dropping a heartbreaking 24-21 bi-district playoff to Kingsville Academy Santa Gertrudis on Friday at Gosch Field. Dilley scored in the first but fell behind 18-6 in the fourth quarter, only to rally to take a 21-18 lead with 3:45 to play. The Lions, however, scored with 21 seconds remaining to steal the win.
