Cowgirls off to blazing 11-2 start to volleyball season

Looking to maintain the momentum of its regional qualifying berth in 2014, Cotulla's Cowgirls have opened the 2015 campaign scorching hot, having won  11 of 13 games this year. The team opened play with a tri-match against La Pryor and Texas Girls' Coaches Association #14 state team Natalia and won both contests.

HIT THE LIGHTS

With two scrimmages under their belts, local teams will hit the fields this week under the glare of the Friday Night Lights as action goes live and games count on the scoreboard.  Pearsall will resume its rivalry with the Cotulla Cowboys as they head to Myers Memorial Stadium to  tangle with the Cowboys on the newly renovated football field.

Lady Mavs earn title at Cornerstone Christian tourney

For a second straight week, the Pearsall Lady Mavs have had a similar result in volleyball action, winning another tournament title at Cornerstone Christian last weekend. The team swept the field  en route to claiming the title and topped Castle Hills First Baptist, Cornerstone Christian and Bracken  Christian Academy in pool play on Friday at the event.

CRUNCH TIME

By Manuel Azocar   Teams hit the fields last week for their first action against live opposition as each participated in  scrimmages Friday and Saturday, August 14 and  15. Dilley kicked off the year with action against La Pryor on Friday evening in a 6 p.m. contest. The Wolves played well defensively and managed to work through some inconsistencies on offense. Pearsall then took the field against the Eagle Pass CC Winn Mavericks on the same day for a 7 p.m. outing.

Pearsall tops Dilley for Lady Wolves championship

By Manuel Azocar  Pearsall topped Dilley in the title game of the annual Lady Wolves Classic volleyball tournament to nab its firsttourney title of the season last  week. The Lady Mavs won in five games, tallying a 20-15, 25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 15-13 decision. "This was a good match for us to play in because it gave us early season experience on how to persevere in a fifth and deciding set, as well as experience of being in a championship match," PHS Head Coach Russell McElroy. "The girls played really hard and fought for every pointand showed great character playing together, especially when they were behind on the score board.

Pee Wee registration begins Aug. 11

Pearsall Pee Wee football and cheerleading registration begins on Tuesday, August 11 and Thursday, August 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, August 15 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Security State Bank Community Room.

Time for some action...

Pearsall, Dilley and Cotulla will hit the fields this week for their first live-action of the season as the three will compete in scrimmages on Friday and Saturday, August 14 and 15. Cotulla will be in Lytle on Saturday morning while Pearsall will host Eagle Pass CC Winn Friday evening and Dilley will host La Pryor at 6 p.m.

SPORTS SHORTS

Pearsall High School sophomore Apolonia "Apple" Rodriguez and select softball team"Nitro" of Del Rio will  be attending the Babe Ruth League 16-&- Under Softball World Series at Jensen Beach, Florida August 6-13. The game will be televised. Apple is the daughterof Ernesto Rodriguez and Elizabeth Elizondo.
