Going the distance

Pearsall sprinter Ricardo Cantu powers through the final 100m of the 800m relay during action at the area track meet in Poteet Thursday, April 23. Cantu and his relay teammates finished second overall, earning a trip to the Class 4A, Region IV track meet in Kingsville this weekend. Dilley and Cotulla will send athletes to the Class 3A regional event in San Antonio on Friday and Saturday.

Local athletes prep for area meets

Having battled it out in district competition at the 30-4A and 30-3A track and field meets last week, area qualifiers will now compete in action this week in Poteet and George West. Pearsall will send 14 boys and 10 girls to area action at Poteet on Thursday, April 23 while Dilleywill advance 13 boys and 15 girls to the area meet in George West on Wednesday, April 22. Cotulla will also be in competition at George West, sending nine boys and nine girls. Action in Poteet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the running of the girls' 3,200m run. Field events are slated to begin at 11 a.m. with running events beginning at 5:30 p.m. Events in George West will begin with the 3,200m run at 2 p.m. with field events starting at 3 p.m. Teams will have a one hour break prior to running events, which are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

DOWN AND DIRTY

Josh Luna hit a two-run homerun and Christian Cruz nailed a walk-off, two-run double as Pearsall crushed Crystal City 13-3 to move to 6-0 in league play and set up a first place showdown with Pleasanton on Wednesday, April 22. The Eagles blanked Jourdanton 8-0 and topped Poteet 8-2 to remain a game behind the Mavericks in the district standings at 5-1. Pearsall crushed Carrizo Springs 12-2 on April 14 to improve to 5-0 but had its contest with the Javelinas postponed until Monday night, April 20.

Wolves, Lady Wolves

Dilley dominated the field, claiming team titles in both the boys' and girls' divisions during action at the District 30-3A tennis tournament last week. The Wolves' district champions included Kyle Stone, Adrian Zepeda, Charles Salazar, Marcus Martinez, Jesse Eguia, Felix Carcamo, Chris Benavidez, Jordan Hernandez and Manuel Rodriguez while Lady Wolves' district champs included Dilley's Lady Wolves' district champions include Ieshia Flores, Alexus Molina, Katrina Martinez, Devon Ramirez, Darion Ramirez, Sabrina Estrada and Perla Rodriguez. The team also saw individual success at the event as well as Katrina Martinez and Marcus Martinez were crowned the district mixed doubles champions.

Pleasanton outlasts Lady Mavs, Warhorses edge Mavs for titles at Devine Relays.

Devine's boys and the Pleasanton girls put in equally dominating performances in taking the top spots at the annual Warhorse Relays last Wednesday, April 1 while Pearsall took second in both divisions. Pearsall's Mavericks were 72 points shy of Devine's 192 total team points while the Lady Mavs came up 59 points short of Pleasanton. TJ Navarro and Ricky Medrano captured Pearsall's only gold medals as Navarro took first in the triple jump with a leap of 38'8” while Medrano won the 800m run with a time of 5:00.0.

Dilley sends seven to regional golf competition

Dilley's Wolves dominated the field and claimed the District 30-3A golf title by 39 strokes during the league meet in Laredo on Monday, April 6. The team combined for a total scored of 369, outpacing Hebbronville's “A” team by 39 strokes. The Longhorn's “B” team was third overall with a score of 430. In all, Dilley had seven players earn regional qualifying bids. Israel Ramirez was also crowned the individual district champion, with an 86.
