BI-DISTRICT BREEZE

Pearsall sweeps Poteet, winning 11-0, 13-3 to claim bi-district title.

Araceli Ortiz tossed a perfect game and nearly struck out every batter she faced in a game one victory to set the tone for Pearsall's bi-district softball sweep of Poteet last week.

The series win marked a second consecutive bi-district championship for Pearsall, although this one proved much easier than last season's.

Pearsall blanked Poteet 11-0 in the opener behind Ortiz's complete mastery of the Lady Aggie hitters. She fanned 14 of the minimum 15 batters she faced in five innings. She was equally as dominant in the second game as she struck out 13.

Dilley downs Taft in best-of-three series, 2-1

MANUEL AZOCAR III
Sports Editor

Dilley didn't let a five-run deficit and subsequent game two loss deter them from rallying to claim a two games to one victory over Taft in a best-of-three bi-district softball series last week in Orange Grove.

The Lady Wolves rolled to a 9-1 victory in the opening game of the series and crused the Lady Greyhounds 8-3 in the pivotal third game. The team fell behind early and could not overcome the deficit in dropping the second game 8-6.

“Our offense in the inning came from singles by Deyanira Herrera and Alessandra Ruiz, a homerun by Cheyenne Martinez, and an error on a ball put in play by Espe Leal,” DHS Head Coach Chip Procter said. “Deyanira toed the rubber for us and surrendered one run on five hits over seven innings, striking out six.”

TWICE IS NICE

Pearsall High School students voted Matthew Gonzales and Rosa Hernandez as the 2018 Prom King and Queen during the PHS Prom on Saturday, April 21 at the high school cafetorium.

By MANUEL AZOCAR III

Despite a minor setback in league play, Pearsall cruised in the district finale, crushing Lytle 14-0 to claim the District 29-4A crown and earn back-to-back titles on Friday, April 20.

Pearsall dropped a surprising 4-1 decision to Devine on Tuesday, April 17, their only blemish in a 9-1 district season.

The team, however, regrouped from the loss and was able to control Lytle from the outset and secure the title-clinching victory.

“It's been fun, it's been a learning experience,” firstyear PHS Softball Coach Reynaldo Ramirez said of the season. “We just weren't hitting the ball well to open the year. But the bats have come alive, we're averaging about 14 runs a game and 18 hits per contest.
