In action during Spring Break and prior to district, Pearsall went 2-1 at the annual Maverick Classic Baseball Tournament before falling in consecutive outings to Eagle Pass CC Winn and Floresville last week.

 

The Mavericks notched wins over Natalia and San Antonio Southside at the tournament before dropping a 6-1 decision to Pleasanton.

 

“Junior Jares Ramirez had two grand slams in the tournament hitting one against Southside and his second was a walkoff to win the game against Natalia,” PHS Head Baseball Coach Ray Talamantes said.

Lady Mavs dominate, claim girls’ title at Dilley meet.

In action at Dilley's Wolf Pack Relays prior to the Spring Break holiday, Pearsall was dominant in talling 245 points and the team title at the event on Thursday, March 8.

“The girls did an outstanding job competing in every event,” PHS Track Coach Teresa Trevino said.

Dilley’s Dominguez narrowly misses state powerlifting berth

Dilley's Dustin Dominguez narrowly missed a state qualifying berth, falling 40 lbs. shy of earning a bid to the state powerlifting meet last Friday, March 9, as Dilley and Cotulla sent 12 athletes to the Region 5, Division 3 event in Bishop.

Dominguez tallied a total weight of 1,500 lbs. in the 275-lb. weight class, 40 lbs. behind the second place finisher in that division. The state qualifying total for the 275-lb. division, regardless of placing is 1,550 lbs.

Pearsall to host annual Maverick Classic tournament

Ten teams will be in competition at the annual Maverick Classic Baseball Tournament this weekend in Pearsall.

The tournament has been plagued by inclement weather the last few years and was cancelled altogether a year ago after play started on Thursday but delayed. Play resumed on Friday but was later also called off after another round of showers. Play on Saturday was cancelled, as well.

Mavs drop three of four at Hondo-Devine tourney following 4-0 start.

Following a 4-0 start, Pearsall endured a rough outing at the Cross the Creek Baseball Tournament in Hondo and Devine, Thursday-Saturday, March 1-3, going 1-3 in action at the event.

Pearsall dropped its first three games of the tourney before finally pulling out a win in their final contest, topping Dilley 10-9.

Wolves fourth, Lady Wolves eighth at Carrizo Springs

Still finding their footing in the early part of the track and field season, Dilley managed 57 points and a fourth place finish at the Wildcat Relays in Carrizo Springs on Thursday, March 1.

The host Wildcats won the event with 180 points while Crystal City took second.

Lady Mavs fourth at Uvalde Meet

Competing in a field of 14 mostly larger schools, Pearsall finished fourth overall in action at the Uvalde track and field meet on Saturday, February 17. “We faced some fierce competition in each division,” PHS Head Track Coach Teresa Trevino said.

“The girls did their best and represented their team and school very well. They did a great job competing and getting personal bests in their respective events.” Kaylynn Rios and April Parsons led the team as both finished first in their respective events. Rios dominated in the high jump, wrapping up the event early on en route to a first place finish.

The Cotulla High School powerlifting Cowgirls will send ten athletes to the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association Region 5 competition on Saturday, March 3 in Carrizo Springs. Qualifying lifters and their respective divisions are Heather Hernandez, 97 lbs., Aliya Bustamante, 97 lbs., Kaylee Garza, 105 lbs., Stephanie Benavidez, 123 lbs., Pauline Inocencio, 132 lbs., Katrina Hernandez, 148 lbs., Leah Swiney, 181 lbs.,

Daniela Quintero, 198 lbs., Heaven Gonzalez, 220 lbs., and Victoria Gonzalez, 259+lbs. The Cowgirls had 19 lifters competing this year. For the year, the team has earned first, second and third place plaques at all five meets this season

Lady Pirates’ rally sinks Pearsall at area

Lady Mavs race to 9-0 lead, fall 54-34 to Hildago in area hoops playoff.

Pearsall jumped out to a 9-0 lead on Hidalgo but could not maintain the momentum of the quick start as the Lady Pirates rallied down the stretch and eventually pulled away for a 54-34 victory in area playoff action last Friday in San Diego.

“I want to commend our Lady Mavs on an outstanding season,” PHS Head Coach Arlene Silva said. “Competing in the area round of the playoffs is quite an achievement for our basketball program. We faced a tough opponent in Hidalgo, a program that is established traditionally in boys and girls basketball. That's where we strive to be.
