COTULLA COWGIRLS BASKETBALL
DISASTROUS THIRD PERIOD ALLOWS HONDO TO RUN AWAY WITH 55-44 DECISION.
Hondo used a strong third quarter effort to snap Cotulla’s 14-game winning streak and drop the Cowgirls in the District 28-3A basketball opener on Friday, January 6.
The Cowgirls notched their 14th straight win earlier in the week when they rolled past George West 60-37 in the final non-district outing of the year.
Cotulla then hosted the Lady Owls on Friday and dropped a 55-44 decision to Hondo in the league opener.
Allyse Leija led the team at George West with 20 points while Sedelia Wilson-Larkin, Jasmine De La Garza and Alinna Botello all had ten points apiece. Miranda Gonzalez added six points while Ivorie Romero added four points in the win.
A big first half propelled Cotulla to the win as the Cowgirls led 14-9 after the first and 35-13 at intermission.
Leija finished with 16 points in the loss to Hondo while Wilson-Larkin had 12.
Botello added six points and Gonzalez tallied five.
Cotulla was in control in the first, jumping out to a 15-10 lead on the Lady Owls. Trailing 8-4, Cotulla went on an 11-2 run to close out the period. Hondo rallied in the second, however, cutting into the margin and grabbing the lead as they outscored Cotulla 17-10 in the stanza to take a 27-25 lead at halftime.
Things quickly unravelled for Cotulla in the third as shots simply did not fall for the Cowgirls while Hondo scored 13 points to increase the margin to 40-28 going into the fourth.
Cotulla tried to rally in the fourth but Hondo was able to keep pace and held on for the 55-44 decision.
The loss, the first for the Cowgirls since December 1, drops the team to 0-1 in league play and 16-4 overall.
Cotulla was at Lytle Tuesday evening and will host Natalia on Friday night. Lytle is tied with Crystal City and Hondo at 1-0 in the standings while Natalia is currently 0-1.
