COWGIRLS’ 21-4 FOURTH PERIOD SPURS ROUT OF LADY MUSTANGS
Cotulla bounced back following a pair of district losses with a crushing 53-35 win over Natalia Friday evening, January 11.
After posting 14 wins in a row in non-district play, the Cowgirls dropped a 55-44 decision to Hondo in the 28-3A opener on January 6.
Cotulla then travelled to Lytle on January 9 and fell behind early en route to a 61-50 loss on the road.
Allyse Leija led Cotulla with 14 points while Sedelia Wilson-Larkin added 13 for Cotulla. Alinna Botello and Miranda Gonzalez both finished with eight points apiece.
Lytle took an early 12-7 lead and then extended it to 29-18 at halftime. Cotulla rallied in the third, outscoring Lytle 18-14 to cut into the margin and make it 43-36 going into the fourth. The Lady Pirates turned things around in the fourth to pull away for the 11-point victory.
The Cowgirls rolled past Natalia on Friday night but needed a strong fourth period to break open what had been a tight ballgame to that point.
Cotulla led 9-7 after one and extended the lead to 20-16 at the half. Natalia rallied in the third, outpointing the Cowgirls 15-12 in the third to cut the margin to one point at 32-31 going into the fourth.
Cotulla break the game open in the final stanza, outscoring the Lady Mustangs 21-4 in the stanza to secure the 18-point win.
Leija led the way with 23 points while Wilson-Larkin added 18. Gonzalez had four points while Jasmine De La Garza, JoAnn Guzman, Quiana Mendez and Botello all scored two points apiece.
Cotulla was at Crystal City Tuesday evening to take on the front-running Lady Javelinas. Crystal City is 3-in league play, tied with Lytle atop the standings. The Cowgirls will close out the week and the first round of league play on Friday at Dilley.
The Cowgirls improved to 17-5 for the season and 1-2 in district play.
