Dilley Wolves Basketball Team
Despite losing two of their last three games, Dilley’s Wolves have secured the fourth and final playoff spot in District 28-3A, earning them a bi-district date with the Poth Pirates.
Poth went 7-0 in District 27-3A, are 13-3 for the season and ranked 11th in the Texas Association of Basketball Coach Class 3A poll.
The two will square off in a bi-district contest but a date, time and location had not been determined as of presstime. According to the UIL, the first round of the playoffs are scheduled to begin February 20.
Dilley went 8-21 this season and 4-6 in district play to finish fourth in the standings.
The secure the final postseason slot with a 67-57 win over rival Cotulla on Tuesday, February 7. Senior Jorge Herrada led the team with 27 points in the victory.
The team then dropped a 109-49 decision to Crystal City on Friday, February 10 and closed out the regular season Monday evening with a 92-59 loss to Hondo.
While starting quickly out of the gates against Cotulla, the Wolves fell behind early in their losses to the Javelinas and Owls.
Dilley led 28-13 over the Cowboys and held on for a ten-point victory. Crystal City built a 28-14 first period lead on the Wolves en route to a 58-26 halftime lead and eventual 60-point victory. The same situation played out Monday evening against Hondo as the Owls raced to a 23-15 first period advantage. The Owls broke things open in the third, outscoring Dilley 30-17 in the stanza as the lead ballooned to 67-40 going into the fourth.
