DISTRICT 29-4A SOFTBALL
LADY MAVS RALLY TO TOP CARRIZO SPRINGS, IMPROVE TO 4-1 IN 29-4A STANDINGS.
Pearsall won its second straight district contest last week following a loss to first place Floresville on March 10, but the team has been far from its dominant self in doing so despite a 4-1 league mark.
The team has had to rally from behind in four of its last six outings, winning three of those contests. Pearsall has knocked off two of the top teams in the standings in Devine and Uvalde but has been up and down in its play this year.
The team had to rally to beat Devine in a 6-3 decision in its district opener but blasted Uvalde 13-0 when the Lady Lobos were tied atop the standings.
“We have a few things we need to tighten up on with our batting and defense,” PHS Head Coach Melissa Sanchez said. “But the ladies have done well and we had a good competitive game (against Carrizo Springs), especially coming off of the 12-0 win against Uvalde. “It was good to have the team dig their heels in to pull out the 5-3 win against Carrizo.”
Unlike the win over Uvalde, in which Pearsall rolled to a five inning, run-rule victory behind 11 hits and 13 runs, the team had to rally from a rough first inning. The team fell behind 3-0 in the first but used a strong third inning to cut the margin to 3-2. Kristen Morales belted a two-run homerun over the left centerfield wall to put the Lady Mavs back in the contest.
Deranda Talamantes added a triple that scored Sophie Garza from first as she was able to steal home on a passed ball at the plate. Ebony Garza then hit an RBI double as Pearsall went up 4-3. The Lady Mavs would add a final run and pitched a shutout from the second inning on to secure the 5-3 win.
Pearsall took on winless Pleasanton Tuesday evening with a chance to keep pace with Floresville in the standings. The Lady Mavs will then host Devine Friday in another key league outing. Pearsall notched a 6-3 win over the Arabians in the first round of district play. Devine then lost a 4-0 decision to Floresville but have since won four straight, shutting out two opponents and allowing only five runs in those outings. The Arabians are currently third in the standing at 3-2, one game behind Pearsall. Uvalde sits fourth at 3-3 while Carrizo Springs is fifth at 2-3. Somerset is 1-4 while Pleasanton is winless at 0-5 in league play.
