Pearsall’s best season in 13 years came to an end last week as the Lady Mavs dropped a best-of-three regional quarterfinal playoff series to Alice at Kenedy’s Joe Gulley Park.
The Lady Coyotes rode the hot arm of pitcher Ava Hernandez, and the team won two straight games, 5-0, 10-1, to claim the series two games to none.
Pearsall kept both contests close throughout with their defense and strong pitching but could not generate any sort of consistent offensive threat.
“Unfortunately our post season journey came to an end,” PHS Head Coach Melissa Sanchez said. “Alice had a strong team and it was a great experience for us. The second game had more adjustments that we had to make.
“We are thankful for all of the support we received from the community. Games like these truly develop character and resilience.”
The Lady Coyotes had a two-out double at the bottom of the first to score a run and lead 1-0. After a scoreless second, Maddie Bradley hit a leadoff double at the top of the third but was left stranded on base.
The Lady Coyotes plated two more runs in the third as a triple scored one and single brought in another run.
Kristen Morales belted a one-out double for Pearsall in the fourth but consecutive strikeouts also left her on base.
Alice added a run in the fourth on a lead off triple and RBI sacrifice flyball. A pair of singles and a double capped the scoring for the Lady Coyotes in the sixth. Alice took command early in game two with four runs at the top of the first and two more in the second to pull out to a 6-0 lead.
Pearsall’s only rally attempt came in the second as they had two on with two outs when Alytris Rodriguez scored on a passed ball. Alice countered after a pair of scoreless innings with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth as the Lady Coyotes pulled away for the 10-1 victory. The Lady Mavs close out their 2023 season with 20-10 record overall and 10-2 mark in District 29-4A. Pearsall won bi-district and area titles with wins over Rockport-Fulton and Zapata.
