PEARSALL MAVERICKS FOOTBALL
Winner would avoid state ranked Wimberley, Navarro in potential first round playoff.
With a week off to rest, recover and regroup, Pearsall will also have added incentive this week as they return to district action to take on the Devine Warhorses.
Devine dropped a 31-21 decision to the Bandera Bulldogs on Friday, falling to 2-1 in the 14-4A, Division II standings entering their matchup with the Mavericks this week.
The Warhorses close out their regular season this week while Pearsall has a contest against San Antonio Young Men’s Leadership Academy next week at home. If the Mavs can with both outings, they would secure the second seed in the district and a more favorable first round playoff matchup.
“It is motivating for us being a higher seed,” PHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Ruben DeLeon said. “It’s always something you want when you get into the playoffs, to have a better matchup to start the first round.
“The bye came at a good time for us, to rest up and regroup as a team. It gives us an extra week to prepare for a crucial game in our district season and also be healthy moving forward to end the season.”
With a sweep of their two remaining games, Pearsall would clinch the second seed in the district and a potential first round matchup against Lago Vista, (5-3, 2-1) the current third seed in District 13-4A, Division II.
The third and fourth seeds in 14-4A, DII would earn less favorable pairings against the two powerhouse teams of District 13-4A, DII in Wimberley and Navarro.
Wimberley is undefeated and sits atop those standings. The Texans are also ranked second in the Texas High School Coaches Association Class 4A, Division II football rankings and are fifth in the Texas Football 4A poll. Navarro, (5-3, 2-1), the second seed in 13-4A, is currently ranked 20th in the THSCA football poll.
Pearsall nearly toppled the Wahorses a year ago, when Devine was ranked 16th in the state. The Mavericks led at halftime and much of the second half and held a 22-21 lead in the fourth until Devine rallied late to steal a 29-22 decision.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Warhorse Stadium in Devine.
