District Attorney Audrey Louis’ office will host a Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) in Frio and La Salle counties this month as part of an effort to provide civilians with education and defense tactics in the event of an active shooter scenario.
According to instructor Harry Jimenez of HJ Security Solutions, the average response time for police response to an active attack is four minutes.
“Without effective, pre-planned response options for civilians at the scene of the attack many victims can be seriously injured or killed,” Jimenez said.
Participants in the free training session learn about disaster response, how to prepare for and respond to being trapped inside a building during an active shooter event, and steps they can take to assist responding law enforcement and to limit casualties.
Jimenez will also help participants identify and discuss the phases of disaster response psychology and how to limit their impact on potential victims.
The instructor said there is a three-phase process that victims may experience during mass attacks that include denial, deliberation and what he describes as the decisive moment.
The first training will be held in Frio County on Monday, February 12, in the Frio County Conference Room, from 6 to 8 p.m.; the second in the La Salle County Courthouse, 2nd floor, on Wednesday, February 28, from 6 to 8 p.m.
