The Dilley Police Department is nearly fully staffed for the first time in years, according to Chief Steven Hernandez.
The department commonly viewed as a revolving for administration positions now only has two vacancies. A number of former police chiefs at Dilley have gone on to serve as sheriff in either Frio or La Salle counties, including Carl Burris, Albert DeLeon, and Anthony Zertuche. Other administrators have left to serve other agencies in larger communities, including former chiefs Armando Romo and Homer Delgado.
“I am proud to say that thirteen out of the fifteen positions are filled,” Chief Hernandez told councilors during a Tuesday, February 13, meeting. “All patrol positions are filled. Only two administration positions are vacant, which are the lieutenant and code compliance.”
According to the police chief, the department received four applications for the code compliance position; as of the meeting, three of those four applicants had been interviewed.
“We can do without the lieutenant position being filled since all patrol positions are filled,” the police chief said.
For January, the department received 105 total calls; handled 84 traffic violations; and submitted five cases to the district attorney and one to the county attorney for prosecution.
