CLASS 4A BI-DISTRICT SOFTBALL
Columbus earns playoff sweep in area rematch from a year ago.
Cotulla’s softball Cowgirls ended their 2024 softball season much like they did a year ago, with a second round loss to Columbus in the area playoffs over the weekend.
Although, unlike a year ago, Cotulla put up a much better fight against their second round opponents, having their moments in both games of the series before falling 3-0, 10-4.
“What a great softball season this year, we defended the district title, were bi-district champions, and put up an outstanding fight in the area round of the playoffs,” CHS Head Coach George Martinez said of his team’s year. “The future looks really bright for the Cotulla softball program.”

Following its 9-0 rout of West Campus the Cowgirls had the tall task of taking on a talented Columbus squad.
“I thought the girls competed very well,” Martinez said. “Friday night we were very close to victory, although the scoreboard said otherwise, I felt like it was a moral victory for our team.
“The experience these young athletes on the team gain from playing such a tight game against a team like Columbus is something that will definitely benefit us in the future.”
In a defensive struggle, the Lady Cardinals plated a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to score all the runs it would need in a 3-0 shutout win Friday night, May 3.
“On Saturday, we came out on fire offensively, which showed me that our girls had not let Friday’s game get in their way,” the coach said. “The determination and grit they displayed was unbelievable, obviously we ran out of gas at the end, but we truly showed a lot of fight and we never put our heads down.”
The Cowgirls led 2-0 after the first inning but Columbus rallied with six runs by the second and take a 6-2 lead. Cotulla answered in the third to cut it to 6-4.
Cotulla’s best shot came in the fourth with a pair of runners on with one out but could not take advantage as Columbus worked out of the jam.
Columbus pulled away down the stretch to claim the 10-4 victory and clinch the series.
