Pearsall Public Librarian Jennifer Muniz kicked off the annual summer reading program this week, opening registration on Monday to youths of all ages.
Muniz offers the summer reading program as a way to reduce the youths’ learning loss known as ‘summer slide’ that takes place over the two-month break. The program keeps children reading and engaged in learning as a way to maintain literacy gains they made during the school year, Muniz said.
Registration opened on Monday, June 3, for the free six-week reading program for children up to age 17. Participants can sign up at the library or online until June 14; reading logs are due by July 12.
The program has three age divisions: ‘Read to Me’ for ages 0-8; ‘Independent Readers’ for ages 9-12; and ‘Teens’ for ages 13-17. At the end of the summer, those who completed the program will attend a party to receive prizes donated by the city and other contributors.
Along with the summer reading program, the library offers daily events to encourage everyone to visit the facility.
On Tuesdays beginning at 3:15 p.m., Muniz challenges kids’ creativity during Kids Crafternoon. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning at 10:30 a.m., Muniz reads a book to patrons and then offers an arts and crafts session related to the story.
Further information on the library’s summer activities can be found on the municipal facility’s Facebook page. To register for the program, interested individuals can visit the Library at 200 East Trinity Street or download a copy of the registration form by visiting cityofpearsall.org then emailing the form to pearsallpubliclibrary @gmail.com.
