Gas line pressure testing in July
Cotulla city gas utility department head Chevo Garcia told councilors last week that local service users should not experience any outage when the network is pressure tested by its provider next month.
West Texas Gas, which supplies Cotulla with its gas from a site on the outskirts of Dilley, is scheduled to perform a routine pipeline integrity test of the system on Tuesday, July 16. Gas will continue to flow to customers during the testing period, Garcia said, although it will come from a substitute provider.
The third-party gas supplier has yet to be named.
Garcia took the position as head of the department last month.
“West Texas Gas will shut down the line,” Garcia said on Thursday, “and we have taken steps to ensure that customers can expect zero interruption to their service.”
The department head reported on Thursday, June 13, that Cotulla gas customers with service problems had seen issues resolved swiftly but that there are delays in equipment delivery for other work..
Six gas leaks had been identified over the past month, Garcia said, of which two had been repaired immediately and four were scheduled for repair.
Three of the four are listed as Grade 3 leaks, Garcia said this week, which are listed as non-hazardous and do not pose a threat to area residents. One is a Grade 2 leak, which has the capability of becoming a hazard if it is not managed, he added.
The two leaks that were repaired during the past month were listed as serious, he said.
“These are leaks in the city lines, not on the customer side,” Garcia said. “These are mostly located at the regulators. We have to replace those, and that’s what we’re doing.
“We are waiting for parts to be delivered for these repairs,” he said. “It’s not unusual for us to have to wait.”
