PEARSALL BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Mavericks go 2-3 at Alice tourney, open district play this Friday at Uvalde.
In wrapping up non-district play for the year, Pearsall participated in the Alice Coyote basketball tournament, finishing 2-3 overall at the event in a field packed with talented teams last week.
Of the Mavericks’ three losses, two were to the eventual Platinum and Gold Champions at the event.
“For some reason all the top teams there at the tournament were in one pool,” PHS Head Coach Jeff Viesca said. “We lost to the Texas Lions who were the Platinum champions and Brazoswood, who were the Gold champions. “We ended up in the Silver bracket where we beat Robstown 100-39 but then on Saturday we struggled bad. The constant two-hour drive to Alice and back for three days just caught up to us. We lost to Zapata by a point.”

On the opening day of the tournament, Pearsall fell 76-52 to the Texas Lions but bounced back to top the Laredo Harmony School of Excellence 81-54.
On Friday, Pearsall dropped a 78-67 decision to Brazoswood before bouncing back again to crush Robstown by 61 points. The Mavs then fell in action on Saturday, falling 48-47 to Zapata.
In action prior to the tournament, the team claimed a 67-61 win over Laredo Harmony on Tuesday, December 10.
The team will open league play this week as they travel to Uvalde on Friday, December 20 for their 27-4A opener. Pearsall will then be off next week for the Christmas break before resuming league play at home against Carrizo Springs on Tuesday, December 31.
“It’s tough only because UIL makes every school district shut down for five days during the Christmas break,” Viesca said of the scheduling quirk. “With that being mandatory, when we are allowed back into the gym we have two days to prepare for our next opponent.
“Battling getting back into shape after Christmas is always tough but, for the most part, we are ready and prepared. Our tough (pre-district) schedule has prepared us for all our district opponents we are about to see. It’s going to be interesting because this is a good basketball district, everyone is going to have to play their best basketball from here on out.”
