PEARSALL BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Somerset rallies in the second half to top Mavs in battle of district unbeatens.
Pearsall toppled Devine 98-90 in a high scoring affair but saw Somerset rally in the second half of their pivotal contest last Friday as the Mavs fell to second in the league hoops standings.
The Mavs and Warhorses combined to hit on 31 three pointers but Pearsall pulled away in the fourth to claim the eight-point victory and set up the first place matchup with Somerset on Friday.
Pearsall played well in the first half of Friday’s contest but had no answer for the Bulldogs in the second half in dropping a 65-47 decision.
“Somerset was able to capitalize on mistakes we made in the second half and it helped them come back to win,” PHS Head Coach Jeff Viesca said. “I think our approach will remain the same as far as preparation for our next opponent.
“We played Somerset very well offensively and defensively, but we just have to stick to the game plan through out the whole game. If there is one thing that we will spend more time on it’s learning to be more disciplined throughout the whole game, instead of a quarter or a half.”
Pearsall had an open date Tuesday evening following Friday’s big contest and Viesca had mixed emotions about not playing.
“I’m huge on giving the guys some rest, but I wish we didn’t have the bye this week,” he said. “We’ve been rolling in district and I just want it to continue. I just hope the bye doesn’t ruin our momentum.

“Regardless, the guys are ready for Floresville this Friday. Honestly, they are ready to play Somerset again. Overall, I’m proud of the boys for their performance despite the loss. I know Somerset was not expecting us to give them a game.”
Senior Xavier Rendon led the Mavs in the win over Devine with 29 points, 19 rebounds, seven assists and two steals and a pair of blocks. He also eclipsed 2,000 points scored for his career in the win.
Ayden Rodriguez added 20 points, four board, and two assists while Marcus Woodard finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.
Jeremy Rodriguez pitched in 16 points, two boards and an assist in the win, as well.
Rodriguez was quick out of the gates as well against Somerset and finished with 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and a block.
Pearsall led 11-10 after the first and 25-23 at halftime but saw the Bulldogs outscore them 42-22 in the second half.
Woodard hit four of eight three pointers and finished with 12 points, a rebound and an assist.
Rendon was held to ten points, 17 rebounds, two assists, a steal and three blocks.
The Mavs will resume league play on Friday at Floresville.
