Cowgirls advance to second round for third year in a row but can’t solve Tidehaven to advance to regional round of postseason.
Cotulla’s softball season came to a crashing end in Kenedy as Tidehaven earned an area playoff sweep behind a strong offensive performance in the best-of-three area series on Friday and Saturday.
The Cowgirls could not generate much offense while the Lady Tigers belted out hits, 19 in Game one and 16 in Game two, to secure the wins and advance.
“I thought Tidehaven was a solid team that performed very well,” CHS Head Coach George Martinez said. “We’re also a solid team but we didn’t play our best softball.
“I thought we made enough contract on the ball offensively and our pitching was solid. I fell like our biggest issue was on the defensive side of the ball. We just didn’t capitalize on the routine plays and it cost us tremendously.”
A lightning delay hampered play in Game one on Friday but the Cowgirls seemed to respond afterwards. Cotulla fell behind 10-0 through two and half innings but plated a run at the bottom of the third as play resumed.
The team added two more runs at the bottom of the fourth but defensively, the team could not slow Tidehaven.
The Lady Tigers added four runs at the top of the fourth to pull ahead 14-3 after four complete.
Two more runs at the top of the fifth and a Cotulla shutout at the bottom of the stanza saw the game called on the ten-run rule.

Tidehaven scored 16 runs on 19 hits and committed a single error while limiting the Cowgirls to three runs on five hits.
Cotulla slowed Tidehaven in Game two but were still unable to generate the offense to keep pace.
The Lady Tigers plated a pair of runs in the first while Cotulla added one to make it 2-1 after the first.
Tidehaven then proceeded to chip away over the next five innings, scoring two in the second, three in the third and then broke then game open with five runs in the fourth.
Cotulla could not respond offensively and the game was called after the fifth on the ten-run rule, once again.
Tidehaven scored 12 runs on 16 hits with one error while the Cowgirls were held to a single run on two hits and an error.
EJ Zertuche was one for three at the plate while Sareen Ramirez went one for two with a run scored.
Despite the outcome, Martinez lauded his squad for their effort in the series and the season.
“I am extremely proud of the season we had and am looking forward to what this group of girls will accomplish next year.”
Sophomore pitcher Christlyn Munoz went four innings allowing seven hits and 12 runs (one earned) and striking out one batter.
The Cowgirls cap their season with a 16-9 mark overall. They went 9-1 in District 28-3A, winning their third league title in a row. Cotulla’s dominant district run includes a 27-3 mark over three seasons. On top of three straight league titles, the Cowgirls have also claimed three straight bi-district championships, winning them by a margin of 27-7. Cotulla shutout out South San Antonio West Campus 10-0 in 2023, 9-0 in 2024 and rallied to top San Antonio Cole 8-7 this year.
