A La Pryor man found himself behind bars last week after a car crash and a warrant arrest when jail staff found a syringe and 75 grams of narcotics in his rectum.
Frio County deputies have reported that the emergency dispatch received a call regarding a one-vehicle rollover at around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 7. Before officers reached the scene, however, a property owner discovered the vehicle and then met 29-year-old Leonel Escalante walking east along Hwy 57. The property owner reported bringing the man back to the crash site.
Escalante reportedly declined medical treatment from paramedics.
Investigating deputies arrived at the site and learned from the dispatch that Escalante was subject to an arrest warrant in Uvalde County.
The report shows Escalante told investigating deputies that he had been on his way home from San Antonio when his vehicle left the roadway and he lost control of his steering, causing the vehicle to flip.
An initial search revealed that Escalante had several clear bags and two unused needles in the pocket of his shorts.
He was also carrying approximately $2,000 in his wallet.
Escalante was transported to the Frio County Jail, where a correctional officer found him in possession of a syringe with brown liquid and a bag containing a number of narcotics. Officers determined Escalante had attempted to conceal 25 grams of black tar heroin, 183 Xanax pills weighing 51 grams, a marijuana cigarette and a syringe in his rectum.
Escalante faces a third-degree felony charge for possession of a controlled substance; three third-degree felonies for having a prohibited substance in a correctional facility, and a first-degree felony for manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance.
