COWGIRLS BASKETBALL
Cotulla collected a district win prior to the holiday break but have since dropped three straight in league hoops action last week.
The Cowgirls opened District 28-3A play with a 40-37 win over Natalia on December 19 but have lost three in a row to open 2026.
The losing skid started with a tough overtime loss to Lytle on Friday, January 2.
Cotulla led 14-7 after the first but the Lady Pirates turned things around in the second, outscoring the Cowgirls 11-4 in the stanza to tie things up at 18-18 at intermission. The team remained knotted following the third and fourth periods at 32-32.
Lytle then took command in the extra period, outpointing the Cowgirls 7-3 to take the 39-35 win.
Cotulla then dropped a 74-22 decision to Jourdanton in their district home opener on Tuesday, January 6.
Hitting the road once more on Friday, January 9, the Cowgirls suffered a 61-32 loss to Hondo, the number nine state ranked team in the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
At 9-8 overall and 1-3 in district, Cotulla is still currently tied for fifth in the standings, tied with Poteet. Jourdanton is unbeaten at 5-0 while Hondo is tied for second with Crystal City at 4-1.
Lytle is 3-2 in the standings and sit alone in the fourth and final playoff spot. Natalia is seventh at 1-4 while Dilley remains winless at 0-5.
The Cowgirls hosted rival Dilley Tuesday evening and will be Crystal City on Friday, January 16.
