When Mavericks 4-H Club President Lilly Sagemuehl, a senior member of the club, witnessed a woman choking and being saved by a quick-thinking bystander using the Heimlich maneuver, she knew she wanted to take action.
The experience left a lasting impression on Lilly and inspired her to ensure that her fellow club members would be ready to help in a similar emergency.
Motivated by what she saw, Lilly organized a CPR and First Aid class for members of the Mavericks 4-H Club. “Seeing how fast things can happen and how important it is to stay calm and know what to do really opened my eyes,” Lilly said. “I wanted our members to feel confident and prepared if something like that ever happens again.”
The event was met with enthusiasm from club members, with many signing up to take part. Participants completed a comprehensive training session that included a lecture, hands-on practice, and a written test. By the end of the course, each participant earned their CPR and First Aid certification—a valuable life skill that extends beyond their 4-H activities.

The success of the training highlights the leadership, initiative, and community spirit that Lilly brings to the Mavericks 4-H Club. Her commitment to safety and education serves as an example of how one moment can inspire lasting change.
“We’re so proud of Lilly and all of our members who took part,” said the club’s advisors. “This training not only equips them with lifesaving skills but also reinforces the 4-H mission of learning by doing and serving others.”
Thanks to Lilly’s leadership, the Mavericks 4-H Club is now better prepared to care for others—proving that even one person’s determination to make a difference can have a powerful ripple effect throughout the community.
Those participating included Tre Longoria, JJ Olvera, June Gulley, Allee Gulley and Cody Huston.
