The agricultural aviation community is celebrating the achievements of Matt Fitch, a renowned agriculture pilot and owner of Fitch’s Flying Service, who has been recognized for his dedication and contributions to the industry.
Fitch was presented with the Operator of the Year award during a ceremony of the Texas Agricultural Aviation Association (TAAA) on January 15.
With a lifetime of experience and a family legacy in agriculture aviation, Fitch has become a household name in South Texas and beyond.
Born and raised in Pearsall, Fitch was practically destined for a career in agriculture aviation. His family’s history in the field and his own passion for flying led him to pursue a degree in aviation from Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde.
After graduating in 1980, Fitch earned his certificates, including his Certified Flight Instructor rating, and began building his flight experience.
Fitch’s career took off in the early 1990s when he joined his father, Walt, at Smith Company Flying Service, which would later become Fitch’s Flying Service.
The father-son duo built a reputable and reliable operation that has become well recognized in the community.
After his father’s passing in 2013, Fitch took the reins and has continued to grow and operate the business with the same commitment to excellence.
However, Fitch’s impact extends far beyond his own operation.
He has been an active and dedicated member of the TAAA, serving on the board and holding the position of president.
Fitch co-founded the TAAA prayer service and contributed to the association in numerous other ways, often from behind the scenes.
“His humility and dedication to the industry have earned him widespread respect and admiration,” TAAA President Mike Cobb said. “He is not one to seek the spotlight, preferring instead to focus on his work and helping others. His commitment to the advancement of agricultural aviation and his tireless efforts to support his fellow pilots and community have made him a beloved figure in the industry.”
The award bestowed on Fitch is a testament to his lifelong commitment to agriculture aviation and his unwavering dedication to the principles of hard work, leadership, and community service, according to the organization.
As a family-owned and operated business, Fitch’s Flying Service continues to thrive under his guidance, and his his peers have indicated they believe his legacy will inspire future generations of agriculture pilots and industry leaders.
