Lifters look to secure state qualifying marks at Regional powerlifting competition.

Cotulla’s defending Region V, Class 3A, Division II champion Cowgirls sent 19 athletes to the regional meet in Edinburg on Thursday, March 5.
Alessandra Garcia, Brooklyn Kuenstler, Alejandra Chapa, EJ Zertuche, Randi Garcia, Aries Lopez, Ava De La Rosa, Kristen Briones, K’lee De Leon, Jocelyn Ramirez, Quianna Allen, Roberta Roath, Audriana Del Toro, Kayle Guzman, Shizuka Roath, Victoria Rodriguez, Elyssa Gonzalez, Gnevah Blankenship and Kamryn Obregon all earned spots at the regional event by earning qualifying lifts this season.
“We are proud of every single one of these athletes who have put in the work for this season,” CHS Head Coach Sabrina Gonzalez said. “Now it’s their time to step onto a bigger stage and represent Cotulla with the strength and confidence of a Cowgirl.”
In action at the final regional qualifying meet of the season at Natalia on February 18, the team took second overall while four athletes won their divisions.
Alessandra Garcia took first in the 97-lb. division with a total lift of 690 lbs. She posted lifts of 290 lbs. in the squat, 145 lbs. in the bench press and 255 lbs. in the deadlift. Aries Lopez was first at 132 lbs. with a total lift of 665 lbs. Her lifts included 260 in the squat, 145 in the bench press and 260 in the deadlift.
Kayle Guzman won the 220-lb. division with a total weight of 970 lbs. She had lifts of 370 in the squat, 285 in the bench and 315 in the deadlift.
Kamryn Obregon also won the 242-lb. division with a total lift of 770 lbs. Her lifts included 330 in the squat, 195 in the bench and 245 in the deadlift.
EJ Zertuche was second at 123 lbs., Kristen Briones was second at 165 lbs. and Quianna Allen came in second at 181. Audriana Del Toro and Shiuzka Roath were second at 198 and 220 lbs., respectively.
Brooklyn Kuenstler and Gnevah Blankenship both took third at 123 and 242 lbs. while Ava De La Rosa and Roberta Roath were fourth at 148 and 181 lbs.
Alejandra Chapa came in fifth, Faith Abrego was seventh, K’Lee DeLeon was ninth and Avery Castor was 12th in their respective divisions.
The Class 3A Region V, Division II meet was held Thursday morning, March 5 at Bert Ogden Stadium in Edinburg.
Six members of the Dilley powerlifting team punched their tickets to the Texas High School Womens Powerlifting Association regional championships this week in Edinburg following competition at the final qualifying meet in Natalia on February 18.
“Every lift matters and Dilley wishes these ladies the best performances they can give this week,” DHS Head Coach Ismael Rocha said. “Reach for the next level.”

Sanchez posted qualifying lifts for regional competition during action this year.
In action at Natalia, Jessell Duran finished third in the 148-lb. division while Kayla Molina was fourth at 220 lbs.
Bella Ochoa was fifth at 220 lbs while Lizette Martinez was sixth at 181 lbs.
Kassidy Romero was eighth and Juilette Martinez was 11th in their respective weight classes.
With many lifters having already earned qualifying berths earlier this season, many took the opportunity to “keep warm” at the Natalia event.

Six members of the Pearsall Lady Mavs powerlifting team have earned qualifying spots to the Class 4A, Region V, Division II meet in Edinburg this week.
Yuli Valdez, Savannah Jasso, Leilene Cuevas, Neela Escobedo, Dominique Sambrano and Ameris Reed earned the qualifying berths during action this season and were in competition at the event this week.
The team competed at the Javelina Powerfest in Crystal City on February 21 in the final qualifying meet of the season.
Cuevas finished fourth in the 148-lb. division, while Saige Sanchez was fifth in the same weight class. Escobedo was also fifth at 165 lbs. while Jasso finished sixth at 123 lbs. Amaris Reed placed ninth at 198 lbs.
In the boys’ division, Mark Ramirez and Hunter Gonzales both finished second at 123 and 275 lbs., respectively.
Michael Luna was fourth at 165 lbs. while Ryan Salazar was fifth at 242 lbs. Josiah Caballero placed sixth overall at 198 lbs. and Jacobi Aguilar took 11th at 275 lbs.
The Class 4A Region V, Division II meet was held Tuesday, March 3 at Bert Ogden Stadium in Edinburg.
