City of Cotulla and La Salle County government officials stood side by side Wednesday morning, November 1, at the Plaza Florita on the east side of Cotulla to hold a joint groundbreaking ceremony for a long-term multimillion-dollar project that will see the historic site transformed to the community festival ground and gathering place for which it became popular over eighty years and for successive generations. The historic preservation effort will include demolition of later additions to the site – public restrooms and a pavilion – and their placement on nearby properties. The city of Cotulla has purchased buildings facing the plaza and plans to repair them and restore them to their original 1930s appearance, and repurpose them as event sites, vendor spaces, and public facilities. Parking will also be improved, sidewalks restored, and original stone benches repaired. City councilors agreed last month to contract the first stage of the process to KJ Oilfield Services of Pearsall. Present for the groundbreaking were (L-R) Councilors Eloy Zertuche, Tanis Lopez and Manuel Rodriguez, Mayor Javier Garcia, La Salle County Judge Leodoro Martinez III, County Commissioner Noel Niavez, Sheriff Anthony Zertuche, and Commissioner Erasmo Ramirez.
