Pearsall city councilors have voted unanimously to approve placing stop signs at two heavily-trafficked intersections on Margo Drive.
The June 11 decision came after a presentation by Public Works Director Hector Gandara and concerns voiced by Pearsall ISD Board Trustee Lionel Gandara.
“The ultimate goal is to convert this from a two-way traffic control to a four-way traffic control for crossing safety purposes,” the public works director said.
According to Pearsall City Manager Federico Reyes, the proposed ordinance for the stop signs was prompted by a request from the school district.
“Our concern is the safety of our students and traffic control,” the school board trustee said. “We have a lot of pedestrians that walk through there. Both roads are being utilized ten months out of the year.”

Lionel Gandara said he favors a traffic design presented by the public works director using crosswalks, pedestrian crossing signage, and flashing lights.
The targeted intersections include Paseo Tyner, a street used by students and athletes to walk from the high school campus to the band hall, football and baseball fields; and Pecan Street, which runs from the high school parking lot to Pearsall Intermediate School and is used by students walking home from school.
Councilors questioned the school board trustee over financial assistance for the project.
“As far as public signs, that is the city’s responsibility,” Lionel Gandara said. “How would y’all refuse to put stop signs at a place where there is heavy traffic?”
Councilors voted to approve the ordinance and, under the advice of Reyes, have indicated they will address funding the new signage at a later date.
