MAVERICK CLASSIC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
Pearsall took the runner-up spot at the annual Maverick Classic Basketball Tournament over the weekend, falling 71-42 to San Antonio Cole in the championship game at the event on Saturday afternoon.
The team was riding a five-game winning streaking heading into the title game against the talented Cougars, having crushed Hondo prior to the event, 75-46. Pearsall then won four in a row at the event to earn a shot in the title game.
“Overall, I thought the tournament went well. We had a lot of great basketball being played over the weekend,” PHS Head Coach Jeffrey Viesca said. “Our Mavericks made it to the championship game despite many injuries throughout the tournament.
“We just could not catch a break. Even when facing adversity, the boys came out every game and played well.”

Xavier Rendon led the Mavs with 22 points, five rebounds, two assists and four steals in the 29-point loss to Cole.
Jeremy Rodriguez finished with nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal while Marcus Woodard added seven points, two boards and two steals against the Cougars.
Pearsall’s four-game run at the tournament included a narrow 79-76 win over San Antonio Burbank in their opener, a game in which Rendon went off for 43 points, the highest point total in recent school history.
The senior played in three of Pearsall’s five games at the event, averaging 31 points and eight rebounds at the event. He was sidelined for two games with an ankle injury he sustained late in the game against Burbank.
Pearsall would then roll a short-handed Cotulla team 73-21 and rout San Antonio Christian 64-49 before pulling away for a 69-53 decision over Carrizo Springs to reach the title game.
Sandwiched between tournament play, Pearsall routed Hondo and then won a 71-66 decision over Crystal City in a non-district contest at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.
The Mavericks improved to 6-2 for the year and were in action at Ingram Tuesday afternoon, November 26 against Tom Moore High School. The team will then host Eagle Pass on Tuesday, December 3 following the Thanksgiving break.
