PEARSALL MAVERICKS BASKETBALL
Pearsall 0-4 since Christmas and New Year break following 16-4 start to season.
The holiday break seemingly disrupted Pearsall’s momentum as the team has dropped four straight following a 16-4 start to the season as the team also remains winless in league play following a pair of losses last week.
The team was upended 74-40 at Devine and then lost a 61-47 decision to Somerset at home to fall to 0-3 in the District 27-4A standings.
“Our basketball district is tough, unfortunately, you have to bring your ‘A’ game every single district game because if not, it is going to result in losses,” PHS Head Coach Jeff Viesca said. “We have been hurting ourselves way too much, and it has been costing us games.
“There’s still a chance. We are only one game behind the third and fourth seeded teams right now. We just have to do a better job. We had a better game against Somerset, but we just couldn’t put it together offensively.”
Offensively, team shooting has been the biggest factor for Pearsall. The team shot only 23 percent from the field in the loss to Devine but improved it to 35 percent against Somerset.

Ayden Rodriguez has paced Pearsall in its last three outings but the senior has had little offensive help in the three district losses.
Rodriguez had 17 points, six rebounds, an assist and two steals in the Devine loss. Jeremy Rodriguez, another of the Mavs’ offensive threats, finished with nine points, seven boards, three assists and two steals. Aiden Saldivar finished with six points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Ayden went off for 22 points and five rebounds in the loss to Somerset while Jeremy added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and a block as he struggled with foul trouble.
Pearsall’s other scorers combined for only 12 points in the loss. Logan Rodriguez added four points, six rebounds, an assist and four steals while Devin Castillo added four points.
Turnovers have also fueled scoring opportunities for the opposition. Pearsall committed ten more turnovers in the Devine outing and six more than Somerset.
The Warhorses took advantage, outscoring the Mavs 21-13 in points off turnovers. Devine hammered Pearsall in transition points, outscoring Pearsall 25-10 and 18-1 in second chance points.
Somerset likewise took advantage in the same areas, outscoring the Mavericks 23-8 in points off turnovers and held a 24-6 advantage in transition and second chance points.
Pearsall had an open date on Tuesday evening but will host Floresville Friday, January 16. They will then be at Uvalde on Tuesday, January 20.
