Since its launch in 2017, the Pearsall ISD Maverick Scholarship has helped more than 160 students pursue education beyond high school, removing financial barriers and opening doors to college, technical training, and other postsecondary pathways.
The program began with a single fundraising event at Topgolf, where community members gathered with a shared goal: investing in the future of Pearsall High School students. That inaugural event set the tone for what would become a sustained, growing effort to expand educational opportunity in Frio County.
Pearsall ISD faculty and staff have played a critical role in the scholarship program’s growth. Through consistent contributions and organizational commitment, district employees helped transform the Maverick Scholarship from a one-time fundraiser into a well-established annual resource ensuring it remained a priority and reached more seniors each year.

The GEO Group has also been a key partner in the program’s success. Their significant contributions, combined with the dedication of district employees, have expanded both the reach and long-term sustainability of the scholarship.
“When I think about what this scholarship represents, I think about the student who might not have gone to college or a trade school, who almost didn’t apply because the cost seemed out of reach,” Pearsall ISD Superintendent Dr. Jodi Spoor said. “More than 160 times, this community said, ‘We believe in you, and we’ve got your back.’ That’s what Pearsall is all about.”
Spoor also says each scholarship recipient reflects the program’s core mission: ensuring that a student’s zip code or financial circumstances don’t determine whether they can pursue their goals after graduation. Whether heading to a four-year university, a community college, or a vocational program, Maverick Scholarship recipients leave Pearsall High School with a community behind them.
The Maverick Scholarship stands as a testament to what a committed community can accomplish when it chooses to invest in its students, not just once, but year after year.
