PEARSALL FALLS TO SA SOUTHWEST LEGACY AND JOURDANTON; DISTRICT OPENER IS DECEMBER 20
Struggling to find their footing amid a rash of injuries, Pearsall dropped a pair of non-district outings last week, falling to San Antonio Southwest Legacy and Jourdanton.
Legacy rallied in the fourth from a 28-21 deficit to claim a 36-32 win on Tuesday, December 6 while Jourdanton rolled from start to finish in a 50-29 victory.
“We still do not have our full team with us,” PHS Head Coach Victoria Rodriguez said. “God willing, by the time district starts, we will have a healthy roster.
“The game with Legacy literally slipped through our fingers in the last two minutes. We came out strong and had the lead for most of the game but they turned up the intensity and we were simply unable to keep our composure under the pressure.”
Coach Rodriguez said her team was likely looking past Jourdanton in Friday’s loss.
“I feel like the team went into that game (Jourdanton) with a lack of focus to begin with, since they had previously beaten them at the beginning of the season,” she said. “We had a freshman and another junior varsity player with us for those games and they were able to get some good minutes. I was really proud of them.”
Despite injuries this year, the coach said she’s seen improvment in her squad.
“This season has been tough,” she said. “We’ve won more games than last year but our record should be better than it is. The injuries have definitely held us back and made things difficult but I still feel we could have won a few more games.
“With such a young and inexperienced group, teaching them how to close a game out has been challenging.”
Rodriguez is hopeful things will come around by district play.
“We have such a great shot at finishing at the top of our district,” the coach said. “As a coaching staff, we are working diligently to make sure that everything is in place by that time.
“Next week is critical as our first district game is just around the corner on December 20 against Floresville.
