Following the cue by “Game of Thrones” creator, short-story writer, screenwriter and film producer George RR Martin, La Salle County Sheriff Anthony Zertuche and Captain Elvira Gonzales picked up some favorite titles at libraries on Monday, February 27, to read to children at Encinal Elementary School as part of the ‘Read Across America’ program supported by the National Education Association. The organization encourages community leaders and members to engage with local students by reading to them to help motivate them to explore reading and to fuel their imaginations. “A mind needs a book like a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge,” Martin wrote; Sheriff Zertuche and Capt. Gonzales brought the stories to life for the youngsters and encouraged them to seek out story books of their own. (Courtesy photos)
