MAVERICK STAMPEDE CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL
VEGA LEADS MAVS WITH SEVENTH PLACE FINISH; THREE RUNNERS CRACK TOP 15
Angelyna Montes won the girls’ division while the Mavericks were third overall at the 2023 Maverick Stampede Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning, September 23 at the Victor Trevino Sports Complex in Pearsall.
Montes maintained a steady pace at the front of the pack during the varsity girls’ two mile race and made a late push during the final 75 yards to take first place overall. She finished with a time of 13:24.43.
Romeo Vega paced the Mavericks as he finished seventh overall in the varsity boys’ field. He was one of three Pearsall runners to earn a top 15 placing at the event.
The meet was held for the first time this year at the Victor Trevino Sports Complex, moving from the high school campus due to the construction of the district’s new performing arts center. There were 25 teams competing at the event in large school and small school divisions.
Varsity boys’ results are as follows: 7th place, Romeo Vega, 17:39.36, 12th, CJ Garza, 18:24.15, 13th, Ayden Rodriguez, 18:58.92, 19th, Jose Ortegon, 19:45.49, 20th, Chris Martinez, 19:47.32, 22nd, Derek Rodriguez, 20:04.16.
Varsity girls’ results are as follows: first, Angelyna Montes, 13:24.43, 9th, Tori Ortiz, 15:10.52, 37th, Izael Ovalle.
Junior varsity boys’ results are as follows: 9th, JJ Torres, 20:10.67, 10th, Jose Rocha, 20:11.84, 13th, Marc Ramirez, 20:41.43, 17th, Urijah Velasquez, 21:02.37, 18th, Joseph Leija, 21:02.56.
JV girls’ results are as follows: 13th, Savannah Jasso, 18:18.50, 14th, Cora Rogers, 18:43.74, 20th, Carina Martinez, 19:43.47.
Pearsall’s cross country teams will be in competition this Saturday at the Poth Pirate Invitational meet at Poth City Park. The event marks the final meet of the year prior to district competition.
