Pearsall’s Leon Martinez scans the court to pass to a teammate.
After notching an impressive win over previously unbeaten and state ranked Lytle, Pearsall struggled in action at the annual Devine basketball tournament, winning two of five outings at the event.
The Mavs won their opener 70-67 over Fox Tech but then dropped an 85-35 decision to Harlandale. Pearsall rebounded on Friday to top Devine 74-64 but lost in a rematch to San Antonio Christian 84-32. The team then fell 69-65 to Carrizo Springs on Saturday.
“Overall, we did not play well throughout the tournament, even in the games we won,” PHS Head Coach Jeffery Viesca said. “In the past two weeks, we have played a ton of basketball and I think during the tournament it finally caught up to us.
“We just did not look like the same team that came out against Lytle.”
Despite their performance at the event, the coach found positives in his team’s play.
“The guys know that this past weekend was not their best basketball. Even though we struggled this weekend we were able to get two wins,” he said. “We still did a lot of good stuff this past weekend, but I think the bad outweighed the good.
“The good thing is that now we go back to two games a week which allows us more time to regroup and rest.”
Junior Xavier Rendon led the team in scoring and huge performances against Fox Tech, Devine and Carrizo Springs. Rendon tallied 31 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, five steals and five blocks in the win over the Buffaloes. He then went for 26 points, 22 rebounds, an assist and three steals in topping Devine. In the narrow loss to Carrizo Springs, the junior center had 35 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a pair of blocks.
Senior Leon Martinez also had a string of solid performances. He went for 14 points, eight rebounds, an assist and a steal in the win over Devine and added 17 points, three rebounds, five assists, five steals and two blocks in the loss to the Wildcats. Jeremy Rodriguez went for 12 points, two rebounds and two steals against Fox Tech and also had 18 points, two rebounds and a steal against Devine.
Pearsall hosted Ingram Tom Moore Tuesday evening and will be in action against neighboring Dilley on Friday.
