Mavis Kim ‘Mee Ma’ Nichols (Redmond)

Mavis Kim ‘Mee Ma’ Nichols (Redmond), 86, died on December 27, 2023 in San Antonio while holding hands with her sister Dixie Sue Yarborough. She was born in Bation, Louisiana in 1937 to Inez and Raymond Redmond.

She is preceded in death by her husband Baxter Nichols and stepson Gary Nichols.

Mavis is survived by her daughters Susan (Nichols) Kontos and Melissa Nichols and stepson Curtis Nichols, sister and brother-in-law Dixie Sue and Robert Yarborough, grandchildren Alexander and Christopher Kontos and Dylan and Hayden Issacs, niece Locksley Simmons and nephew Glenn Yarborough, and her sister-in-law Elaine Sprouse (Barger).

She is remembered as an advocate for children and those less fortunate.

Mavis was raised in Corpus Christi and earned a Bachelors degree from Texas A&I University in Kingsville. She married Baxter Nichols and lived in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands and Tallahassee, Florida, where she was a teacher and owner of a day care center. Several years after the death of her husband in 1991, Mavis moved to Dilley where she spent her remaining years teaching and advocating for children.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 13 at the Lighthouse Church, 405 N. Main Street in Dilley following a celebration of life at the Dilley Lions Club Civic Center.
