PEARSALL SOFTBALL
Lady Mavs use longball success in winning Somerset softball tournament and home opener.
Pearsall opened its 2025 softball season earning the tournament championship at Somerset over the weekend.
The Lady Mavs took on some tough competition at the event and won three of five contests at the event.
Pearsall split outings on Thursday, dropping a 5-1 decision to Class 5A Eagle Pass Winn before blanking St. Mary’s Hall 6-0. Caitlyn Rodriguez earned her first win of the season on the mound against the Barons.
On Friday, the Lady Mavs finished tied with Lytle, 4-4 as Kristen Morales took the mound.
Jeralynn Gutierrez belted her first solo homerun while her sister Jesslyn Gutierrez added a two-run homerun. Morales smashed a solo homerun to tie the game. The tiebreaking coin flip was won by Pearsall for seeding purposes.
The team then blanked the host Somerset squad 3-0 as Morales earned her first pitching win as the team advanced to the title game.
Pearsall then defeated St. Mary’s Hall in a rematch on Saturday for the tournament championship.

Jesslyn Gutierrez and Rodriguez earned all tournament honors while Morales was named tournament most valuable player.
“I’m beyond proud of these girls for coming out and competing well being that it was our first game together with our basketball girls,” PHS Head Coach Juan Soliz said. “We did commit some small errors but that was expected on game one.
“Overall, they corrected them and played extremely well. I’m proud to be at the helm and I’m looking forward to a great season.”
Following tournament play, Pearsall hoated Holy Cross on Monday, February 17 and earned a walk-off, 10-7 victory over the Knights.
With the game tied at 7-7 at the bottom of the seventh, Jalyssa Vasquez belted a three-run homerun to centerfield to win the game.
Pearsall led 3-1 after the first and 5-4 after two complete but Holy Cross rallied with a pair of runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to take a 7-5 lead going into the Lady Mavs’ final at-bat.
The team plated a pair of runs to tie things up in the seventh before Vasquez hit the walk-off game-winner.
Pearsall will host their inaugural Maverick Classic softball tournament this weekend although an approaching cold front has led school officials to alter the tourney format. Action will take place on Friday and Saturday instead of beginning on Thursday.
