PEARSALL FOOTBALL
With a bye this Friday, Pearsall will have two weeks to prep for bi-district contest.
Carrizo Springs held off a spirited effort from Pearsall to take a 28-14 decision last week as the District 14-4A, Division II playoff picture became a little clearer Friday evening at Mack Laxson Field.
The Mavericks ended up in the fourth and final playoff spot while the Wildcats can earn another three-way split at the top with a win Friday against Bandera.
Bandera toppled Devine earlier this season and currently hold a three-way tie at the top of the standings with the Warhorses and Wildcats, each at 2-1 in district play.
Pearsall is off in the final week of the season while Devine takes on San Antonio Memorial.
The Mavericks will open bi-district play the following week against either Jarrell or Salado. Those two are currently tied atop 13-4A, Division II going into the season finale.
A win in Friday’s contest against Carrizo Springs could have earned the Mavs the third place spot in league play and the team had a shot down the stretch before surrendering a late score.
“The boys battled all night and left it all on the field,” PHS AD and Head Football Coach Ruben DeLeon said. “We had a chance early to stop Carrizo Springs on a fourth down they converted which led to a score. We had a couple short yardage downs where we had bad snaps that did us in on the series for us.
“We had a crucial fourth and one in plus territory that we felt we would have scored out of the half that would have cut into the lead.”
In facing the District 13-4A, Division II champion, DeLeon said the team is in familiar territory and must meet the occasion, head-on.
“We have to go compete and not back down,” he said. “Like we told the boys this week, play to the best of your capability and leave it all on the field. That is all we can ask of you all to do next week with our first round opponent.”
