LADY MAVS BASKETBALL
An improved Pearsall Lady Mavs squad has been on the cusp of securing its first district win this season and despite an 0-5 start, remain only two games out of playoff contention.
The team had close calls against Uvalde and Somerset, dropping both by a combined five points. The team also has an eight-point loss to Pleasanton.
“We are right there to win some games in the next round of district,” PHS Head Coach Phillip Ramirez said. “We are doing a lot better in trusting our teammates and we have to continue using our teammates to keep us in games. A key in offense is to take advantage of every opportunity we get to score points. We can’t miss the easy baskets and we have to make free throws.
“Little things like communication, boxing out and toughness will help us out alot on defense. From the day we started till now, the girls have come a long way and have gotten better. The girls basketball program is building and I can’t wait to see what we are in years to come.”
Devine outscored Pearsall 16-2 in the second and that proved to be the difference in a 43-30 loss to the Arabians last Tuesday, January 6.
Jeralyn Gutierrez paced the team with six points, nine rebounds and five steals. Aubrey Ovalle and Izaely Ovalle each finished with five points.
Gutierrez added 13 points, ten rebounds and three steals in a narrow, one-point, 40-39 loss to Somerset on Friday.
Bailey Morales added 11 points and seven boards with two assists and three steals.
Pearsall was off on Tuesday and will host Floresville on Friday, January 16.
