A dream season for the Pearsall Little League Senior Division Baseball All-Stars came to end in Abilene last week as the team was bounced from the Texas West State Tournament after losses to Laredo and Monahans.
“While the State Tournament in Abilene did not end with the trophy we wanted, these young men competed with the heart, grit, and character that defines our community,” Pearsall Mayor George Cabasos said of the team’s efforts. “Becoming Dist. 21 and Section 3 Champions and advancing to the state stage is an incredible accomplishment.”
The team kicked off the event on Wednesday, July 8 and rallied from a 4-0 deficit to top Monahans in the tournament opener 12-11 and advance in the championship bracket.
Pearsall took on Laredo, who topped Ft. Worth University 6-3 in the first round, in a second round contest on Thursday, July 9 but came up short in a 13-3 decision.
The contest went well beyond midnight and as the losing team, Pearsall had to play in an elimination contest in the consolation bracket against Monahans at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 10.
Monahans would get the better of the Pearsall all-stars, winning the rematch via a 24-3 decision to advance to the state tournament championship
contest against Laredo.
Laredo took that matchup as well, finishing undefeated and claim the Texas West State Championship.
“On behalf of the City of Pearsall, we want to express our deepest pride and heartfelt gratitude to our Senior Division Little League All-Star players, coaches, and families,” the mayor added. “The final few games are not a reflection of the phenomenal talent and brotherhood this team displayed all season long.
“You represented Pearsall with honor, and you have given our town something truly special to celebrate.”
The senior division all-stars started their run with the District 21 Championship at the tournament in Pearsall, then earned a Sectional title after winning the Section 3 tournament in San Angelo.
“ We also want to extend a massive thank you to the entire Pearsall community. The way our citizens, local businesses, the Pearsall Police Department, and the Frio County Sheriff’s Office rallied together, from the packed fundraisers to the unforgettable downtown send-off, shows the true, unbreakable spirit of Pearsall,” Cabasos said. “ To the team, hold your heads high as you make your way back home.
“You are champions in our eyes, and the City of Pearsall stands behind you, incredibly proud of everything you have achieved.”
