Vidal Garza Sr., 93, of Hammond, Indiana, died surrounded by his family, on Thursday, March 6, 2025. He was born on February 7, 1932 in Derby, to the late Pedro DelToro and the late Paula Garza DelToro.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Elva Medrano Garza, siblings Israel DelToro, Pedro DelToro, Guadalupe DelToro and his children Domingo Garza and Paula M. Garza.
Vidal is survived by his sibling Gloria Jasso, his children Linda Garza, Hildy Garza O’Bannon, Vidal Garza Jr., Modesto Garza, Roy Garza, Camilo Garza, and Cynthia Garza Garay, as well as numerous daughters-in-law and sons-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Vidal honorably served in the United States military as a decorated member of the Army 73rd Tank Battalion, earning the Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal, and The National Defense Service Medal. His superiors said he consistently exemplified an unwavering dedication to his nation and displayed a deep-seated patriotism that resonated throughout his life.
Visitation was held on Friday, March 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Black Oak Pentecostal Church of God, at 2725 E. Oakwood Dr. in Gary, Indiana, with Rev. Modesto Garza officiating.
Funeral service and internment were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 15 at the same location. Services were officiated by Min. Hildy Garza O’Bannon. Interment followed at Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond, Indiana.
